Does massage really release toxins?
You'll often hear massage 'flushes out toxins,' and that soreness is toxins leaving. Here's what actually happens, and what massage really does.
Somewhere between the massage table and the front desk, you will often hear some version of “drink plenty of water to flush out the toxins we released.” It sounds plausible and it is repeated everywhere. It is also not how the body works, and letting go of it makes the real benefits of massage easier to see.
There is no toxin to release
The word “toxins” in this pitch never names anything specific, and that is the tell. Your muscles do not store a backlog of poisons that kneading squeezes loose. Filtering genuinely harmful substances out of your blood is the steady, full-time job of your liver and kidneys, and a massage does not speed that up or take it over. There is no mechanism here, just a comforting story wrapped around a nice hour.
Then why are you a bit sore afterward?
Sometimes you feel mildly tender the day after deeper work, and the toxin story rushes in to explain it. But post-massage soreness looks a lot like the mild ache after unaccustomed exercise, which comes from tiny, normal stresses on muscle tissue and the body’s repair response, not from toxins draining out.2 It fades on its own in a day or two. Nothing is being purged, and you do not need to flush anything.
What massage actually does
The honest version is better than the myth, because it holds up. A large review of massage studies found that a single session reliably lowers anxiety, and that a course of sessions can ease depression and ongoing pain.1 The felt experience, that loose, slowed-down calm afterward, is real and measurable. It comes from settling the stress response and easing muscle tension, which is plenty. So drink the water if you like it. Just know you are rehydrating, not detoxing, and that the calm you walked out with needed no toxins to explain it.
