The pitch is that humans hold onto stress the animal shakes off, and that we can learn to let it go the same way.

Here is where the honest answer lands. Deliberate shaking really can leave you calmer and looser, and that part is worth having. The bigger claim, that it discharges trauma stored in the body, goes well past what anyone has shown. So treat the calmer feeling as real and the mechanism story as unproven.

What the shaking is

TRE uses a set of simple exercises to tire specific muscles until the legs begin to tremble on their own. This is sometimes called neurogenic tremor, a shaking the body generates without you forcing it. People often describe it as involuntary but not unpleasant, and they tend to report feeling looser and calmer afterward. One pilot study of the practice found improvements in self-reported wellbeing, though it was tiny and had no control group.1

What it might be doing

The safest reading is that deliberate trembling paired with slow breathing helps down-shift a revved-up nervous system, much like other body-based practices. It gives an anxious body something to do and a clear signal that the threat has passed. So it sits alongside grounding and other somatic approaches, not apart from them as something uniquely powerful.

Where the honest limit is
