Polyvagal theory, honestly explained
Polyvagal theory offers a popular map of safety, stress, and shutdown. Here's what it claims, why therapists use it, and where the science pushes back.
If you have spent any time in somatic or trauma-informed circles, you have met polyvagal theory, even if nobody named it. It is where the language of “safety”, “regulation”, and “shutdown” comes from. The theory works well as a map, and parts of it are genuinely contested. Both are worth knowing before you lean on it.
What the theory claims
Polyvagal theory, put forward by the researcher Stephen Porges, proposes that your autonomic nervous system moves between three broad states arranged like a ladder.1 At the top is a safe and social state, where you feel settled enough to connect with other people. Below that is a mobilized state, the familiar fight-or-flight surge of stress. And at the bottom is a shutdown state, a kind of collapse or numbness the theory links to feeling overwhelmed or trapped.
The theory’s other well-known idea is neuroception: the notion that your body is constantly scanning for cues of safety or threat beneath conscious awareness, and shifting states based on what it detects. It is why a particular tone of voice can put you at ease, or a crowded room can leave you braced, before you have consciously decided anything.
Why it caught on in therapy
Polyvagal theory gave clinicians and clients a vocabulary for experiences that are hard to describe, especially the freeze or shutdown response that older fight-or-flight models skipped over. It reframes those reactions as automatic protective states rather than personal failures, which many people find validating and less shaming. It also points toward practices that emphasize signals of safety and connection, which sit well alongside somatic work.
Where the science pushes back
The clinical framework is one thing. The biology under it is another, and that biology has drawn real criticism. Researchers have challenged some of the theory’s central claims about how the vagus nerve evolved and how its branches map onto these states, arguing the physiology does not hold up as cleanly as the theory presents it.2 That does not make the lived experiences fake. It means the tidy mechanism offered to explain them may not be accurate.
How to hold it
So hold polyvagal theory as a helpful map, not a proven mechanism. Its states give you a decent way to notice and name what is happening in your body, and the practices it encourages, built around safety, slower breath, and connection with others, tend to help whether or not the underlying story is exactly right.
